A Metaphor

So, Friday I was sitting in the student center eating an extremely healthy Chic-Fil-A lunch. I got a regular drink, roughly the size of a medium drink at, oh I dunno, McDonald's maybe. However, the straws the student center employs are those little bendy-straws, that we all loved as kids. I loved them because they make that cool little straw-bendy-noise when bent and un-bent quickly. What I found on Friday, however, is that it is very difficult to make said bendy-straw actually reach down to the bottom of the cup when there is a lid on the cup. Once the bendy section passes through the hole in the lid, it is very difficult to line it up exactly at 180 degrees so that the pressure exerted on the straw will move the lower of the segment down further into the cup. I probably sat for 5 minutes (valuable time!) trying to figure out how, without yielding to the temptation to simply take off the lid and drink from the cup, to get the straw to reach the bottom of the cup. Finally, I pushed my cup away in disgust. I do NOT like to drink directly from cups, so I reasoned that if the straw would not reach the bottom, then I was probably not meant to get the last 4 ounces of my drink anyways. I pushed the cup away and got back to studying. A few minutes later, as I was packing up my things to go to class (nutrition class, ironically), a quick glance around me revealed no less than three students, all sitting at different tables, who were fighting with (and losing to) their bendy-straws in frustration. As I surpressed a giggle, the thought occured to me that I was experiencing a living metaphor. Of course, I won't tell you what that is, because that wouldn't be any fun. I'll leave you to ponder it. The lesson is yours.
